If you own a pool in Houston, you've seen it happen: clear water on Monday, a thunderstorm rolls through Tuesday night, and by Thursday your pool is sporting an unmistakable green tint.
It's frustrating, and it's surprisingly common in our part of Texas. But here's the good news: it's predictable, preventable, and if it does happen, recoverable. Here's what's actually going on.
What storms do to your pool chemistry
A Houston storm doesn't just dump water into your pool — it fundamentally disrupts the chemical balance in three ways:
- Dilution — several inches of rainwater dilute your chlorine, pH buffer, alkalinity, and other chemicals by 10–20% or more in a single storm
- Contaminants — rain carries dust, pollen, bird droppings, and airborne organic matter into the pool. This organic load consumes chlorine rapidly
- Phosphates — storm runoff can introduce phosphates from lawn fertilizer, soil, and decaying vegetation. Phosphates are algae food
The result is a pool with low chlorine, high organic load, and plenty of nutrients for algae — the perfect recipe for a green pool.
Why Houston is especially prone to green pools
Houston's climate makes it algae-friendly year-round. Warm temperatures, high humidity, frequent thunderstorms, and long growing seasons mean algae can bloom in a matter of hours under the right conditions. Combine that with our clay-heavy soil that runs off into pools during heavy rain, and you've got a perfect storm — literally.
Neighborhoods like Bellaire, Meyerland, Westbury, and Brays Oaks, where mature trees and established landscaping are common, see this especially often because of leaf debris and organic matter washing into pools.
How to prevent post-storm algae
Prevention is far easier than recovery. Here's what we recommend to our weekly service customers:
- Keep chlorine on the higher end — during storm season (April–October), maintain free chlorine at 3–5 ppm rather than the minimum 1–3 ppm
- Run the pump longer after a storm — run your circulation system for 10–12 hours the day after heavy rain to filter out contaminants quickly
- Check and balance pH — rain tends to lower pH. Test and adjust to 7.4–7.6 after a storm
- Shock proactively — a shock treatment after a significant storm (1"+ rain) can prevent an algae bloom before it starts
- Skim debris promptly — leaves and organic matter left in the water break down and consume chlorine
- Monitor phosphates — if you have recurring algae issues, test for phosphates and treat with a phosphate remover

What to do if your pool is already green

- Diagnosis — we test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, CYA, and phosphates
- Shock treatment — a heavy dose of chlorine to kill the algae
- Brushing and vacuuming — manually brushing walls and floor to release algae, then vacuuming dead algae out
- Filter management — running the filter continuously and cleaning or backwashing as needed
- Follow-up — returning in 24–48 hours to re-test, re-treat if necessary, and confirm the water is clearing up
Most green pools return to clear, swimmable condition within 48 hours with proper treatment. Severe cases (dark green or black algae) may take longer and require multiple treatments.
